A wartime funeral pageant
In early July 2026, Iran staged multi-day funeral ceremonies for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed with several relatives in the February 28 opening strikes of the US-Israel war on Iran, Al Jazeera and AFP reported.
The ceremonies were designed to project strength and unity while the war continued and Hormuz shipping remained contested. Iran dedicated one day to neighboring Iraq, a core Shia pilgrimage geography.
Najaf on July 8
Thousands of mourners gathered in Najaf as processions began. Iraqi authorities declared Wednesday a public holiday, with ceremonies starting at 06:00 local time.
After a massive procession in Iran’s holy city of Qom, Iraqi officials received Khamenei’s remains on Tuesday night at Najaf international airport in the presence of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and the late leader’s eldest son, Mostafa Hosseini Khamenei.
The coffin moved through Najaf streets to the shrine of Imam Ali. Al Jazeera’s Jack Hewson said the crowd appeared to number in the hundreds of thousands, though exact counts were unknown.
Mojtaba absent
Mojtaba Khamenei, who had taken over as supreme leader after his father’s assassination, remained notably absent from the processions. He had not appeared in public since assuming the role. Officials said he was wounded in the air strikes that killed his father. The severity of those injuries remained unclear.
That absence is politically more important than the crowd size. It left the succession optics incomplete during the most public Iranian state ritual of the war.
Next stops
After Najaf, the body was to go to Karbala for processions at the shrines of Imam Hussein and Abbas, then to Mashhad for burial. IRGC Quds Force chief Esmail Qaani framed the Iraqi rites as proof of a “spiritual bond” between the two Shia-majority countries.
Why it belongs in the catch-up spine
The funeral sits on top of the July 6-7 ship attacks and just before Trump’s July 13 blockade/toll reversal. Domestic legitimacy theater and maritime escalation were happening at the same time.
