Sudan's Civil War Enters Third Year as Famine Spreads Across Multiple Regions

Sudan’s civil war entered its third year in March 2026 with no end in sight as the Rapid Support Forces and Sudanese Armed Forces continue their brutal battle for control of the country. The conflict has created the world’s largest displacement crisis, with over 8 million people forced to flee their homes. Famine has been officially confirmed in multiple regions, particularly in Darfur and nearby areas where RSF forces have been accused of systematic attacks on civilian populations.

The war, which began in April 2023 when tensions between the military and the RSF exploded into open conflict, has devastated Sudan’s already fragile infrastructure. Both parties have been accused of committing war crimes including attacks on civilians, systematic sexual violence, and obstruction of humanitarian aid. International efforts to broker ceasefires have repeatedly failed as both sides believe they can win militarily.

Sudan has become the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. We are failing the Sudanese people on a massive scale.

Darfur Situation

The situation in Darfur remains particularly grave, with reports of mass atrocities reminiscent of the 2003 conflict that prompted international intervention. The RSF and allied Arab militias have been accused of ethnically targeted attacks on African farming communities. The African Union and Arab League have both called for accountability, but no enforcement mechanism exists.

Peace Efforts

Regional bloc IGAD has led mediation efforts, but both sides have refused to attend proposed negotiations. The United States has imposed sanctions on RSF commander Dagalo and other leaders, while also targeting Sudanese military officials. Sudan has become a battlefield for competing international interests, with the UAE, Russia, and other powers supporting different factions.
