JERUSALEM - King Abdullah of Jordan was assassinated today by a Palestinian gunman while entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque for Friday prayers, sending shockwaves through the Middle East and potentially destabilizing the region’s delicate balance.
The assassin, identified as Mustafa Shukri Ashu, a 21-year-old tailor from Jerusalem, shot the king at point-blank range before being killed by royal bodyguards. The king’s 15-year-old grandson, Hussein, narrowly escaped injury in the attack.

Crown Prince Talal, known for his Arab nationalist sympathies, differs significantly from his father’s moderate policies.
