Regional Desk news

Armenian and Azerbaijani forces exchange fire along disputed border areas in Syunik, marking continued post-war tensions

Armenian and Azerbaijani forces engaged in heavy exchanges of fire along the border in Armenia’s Syunik province, resulting in casualties on both sides and highlighting the fragility of the post-2020 war situation.

Escalation Details

The clashes began in the early morning hours when Azerbaijani forces allegedly attempted to advance positions near the villages of Goris and Kapan. Armenian defense ministry reported:

  • 15 Armenian soldiers killed, 12 wounded
  • Azerbaijani forces used artillery and drones
  • Several strategic heights temporarily changed hands
  • Civilian areas came under fire

International Response

Russia, as the regional security guarantor, called for immediate de-escalation:

“We urge both sides to return to the ceasefire regime and resolve disputes through diplomatic channels,” - Russian Foreign Ministry

The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs expressed “deep concern” over the violence, while the EU called for restraint.

Ongoing Tensions

The incident represents the most serious escalation since the 2020 war ended:

  1. Border demarcation remains unresolved
  2. Armenian POWs still held by Azerbaijan
  3. Status of Armenian-populated areas unclear
  4. Russian peacekeepers’ mandate questioned

Local residents in border villages report living in constant fear, with many considering relocation to safer areas.
