Ukraine Proposes Christmas Ceasefire as Fighting Continues Across Front Lines

Zelensky suggests temporary ceasefire for holiday spirit while Russian strikes persist across eastern Ukraine

Ukraine proposed a Christmas ceasefire on December 25, 2025, with President Volodymyr Zelensky suggesting a temporary halt to fighting during the holiday period. The proposal aimed to allow civilians in combat zones to observe Christmas traditions and provide a humanitarian respite from the ongoing conflict. Russia did not immediately respond to the proposal, maintaining its policy of silence on diplomatic initiatives.

The lack of response from Moscow was consistent with Russia’s approach throughout 2025, declining to engage publicly with Ukrainian or Western peace proposals. Fighting continued across all major front sectors on Christmas Day, with Ukrainian defenders manning positions while celebrations were limited by ongoing combat. The war has now lasted nearly four years with no end in sight.

We propose a Christmas ceasefire to give people in the combat zones a chance to observe the holiday. Even in war, there should be moments of peace.
— Volodymyr Zelensky , President of Ukraine

Holiday in wartime

Christmas celebrations in Ukraine were subdued across the country, with many families unable to gather due to displacement, military service, or occupation. In frontline areas, civilians who remained in their homes could not safely venture outside due to ongoing artillery exchanges and drone activity. The Orthodox Church in Ukraine celebrates Christmas on January 7 according to the Julian calendar, meaning some Ukrainian families would observe the holiday later.

Continued Fighting

Despite the ceasefire proposal, military operations continued at normal intensity across Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and other contested regions. Russian forces maintained their offensive pressure on Ukrainian positions, particularly around Pokrovsk and other key cities. The contrast between diplomatic overtures and battlefield reality highlighted the fundamental deadlock in the conflict.

The Christmas ceasefire proposal followed the pattern of previous humanitarian initiatives that have failed to gain Russian participation. Ukraine has periodically called for temporary ceasefires to allow prisoner exchanges, evacuation of civilians, and religious celebrations, but Russia has consistently declined to commit publicly to any pause in fighting.
